We think inside the box.
Furniture
Lay down plastic sheeting or a pallet between furniture and floor of storage unit. Cover all furniture and disassemble, if possible. Wrap table legs with packing paper as scratch protection. Lay assembled tables top down on floor with legs pointing up. Stack chairs seat-to-seat with cloth or paper separating them. Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls.
Metal
Wipe a few drops of oil on bicycles and tools as rust protector. To avoid oil staining, do not store next to exposed items.
Breakables
Separately wrap before storing in dish pack box. Pack paper into bottom, top and empty spaces in carton. Tip plates, saucers and bowls on their sides and use dish pack divider kit for increased security. Labeling is doubly important.
Books and Valuable Papers
File boxes are the best idea for your important documents. Pack books flat and fill any empty space to stop movement. Avoid overfilling cartons: Books are heavy. Keep moisture free with plastic sheeting on top of pallets.
Large Appliances and Equipment
Moisture and mildew will damage your valuables if your refrigerator or freezer is not clean and dry. Leave door slightly ajar. Use valuable storage space inside appliance for small items.
Clothing
Wardrobe boxes allow you to store your clothing on hangers which save the shape of garments.
Packing Tips:
Begin packing a couple of weeks before you move. Careful packing pays by preventing breakage and loss of small and fragile items.
Follow these simple packing tips: they will save you trouble, help you avoid damage to your goods and make maximum use of the space in your storage locker and moving truck.
Appliances: Tape all appliance doors shut when moving. Wedge doors open in storage. Secure all movable parts with paper or wedge. Wrap a paper mat around each item for protection. Freezer or refrigerator, washer and dryer make excellent packing cartons for bedding, towels and clothing. Always clean your stove before moving and give utility companies a few days notice to disconnect appliances.
Beds:
Lash bed rails together with rope or plastic tape. As you take beds apart, mark all pieces so you know which goes with which headboard, etc. Place covers on mattresses to keep clean during moving and storage.
Books:
Books get heavy in bunches. Pack them in small cartons, holding weight to under 30 pounds for easy lifting. Line all book cartons with plastic and fill empty spaces with packing paper.
Bureaus:
Make your bureau drawers earn their passage as extra packing boxes. Fill with small and fragile items. Sweaters, blankets and towels make excellent padding.
Cartons:
Go easy on your back. Hold weight of all packing cartons under 30 pounds. With marking pen, list contents of each carton on the side. For load sizing multiply length x width x height of each carton if that information is not already on the carton.
Chairs:
Protect all chair legs by wrapping them in packing paper. Leave
slipcovers on upholstered chairs and cover them with plastic covers.
